Scholle Crab Nebula
Supernova Petroglyph
The Scholle petroglyph purports to show the creation of the Crab Nebula in A.D. 1054. Unlike many of the Southwest petroglyphs, the Scholle image was dated years after the event. The crescent and star were “painted” with an emulsion of aluminum powder and water for increased contrast. Other images at Scholle show the Morning Star pictogram, complete with claws, demonstrating its function as a war captain in local mythology.
