Los Alamos
National Laboratory

Los Alamos National Laboratory began as part of the World War II Manhattan Project’s centralized facility for nuclear scientific research. Prior to this, atomic research was spread around the country at many universities. Scientific director J. Robert Oppenheimer spent many years of his youth in New Mexico, and recommended Los Alamos mesa to General Leslie Groves. The project’s early days brought thousands of workers to this remote New Mexico town.
