Sandia
National Laboratory

The story of Kirtland Air Force Base merges the lineage of three bases (Kirtland, Manzano and Sandia) combined in 1971 from World War II-era and early Cold War infrastructure around Albuquerque. Air Force Research Laboratory at Kirtland performs research in many areas of high altitude and space-related activities.

The facilities at Sandia National Laboratories also push the limits on energetic materials research and radiation effects on satellites. Sandia advisors were instrumental during the investigation into the 2003 space shuttle Columbia accident.
