Lovelace Medical Center
Dr. William Randolph Lovelace contracted tuberculosis concurrent with earning his medical degree, and moved his family (including infant son William II) to New Mexico. The son would famously help certify the first Mercury astronauts ready for flight in 1960, and also run a similar “unofficial” program for the “Mercury 13,” the first female astronaut candidates.
Lovelace Medical Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico, continues to support the military today with its facility adjacent to Kirtland AFB.
