Clyde W. Tombaugh
Campus Observatory (NMSU)

The main observatories at NMSU are named after Clyde Tombaugh, discoverer of the dwarf planet Pluto in 1930. Tombaugh worked at WSMR in the early 1950s, and taught astronomy at NMSU from 1955 until his retirement in 1973.

He died on January 17, 1997 in Las Cruces. A small portion of his ashes are being carried aboard the New Horizons space probe, expected to reach Pluto in July 2015.
