Tortugas Mountain
Planetary Observatory

The Tortugas Mt. Observatory is positioned on Tortugas Mountain, otherwise known as “A” mountain due to a large white letter denoting the NMSU’s Aggies nickname.

Used regularly from 1963 through 2000, the building and equipment are receiving increased attention by NMSU astronomy professors and students, and NASA in the last decade. Light pollution within the Mesilla Valley is minimal, so the mountain’s altitude provides pristine views for stargazing.
